God is Not Finished with You Yet

Reading for the Day: Philippians 1:6

“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.”

It takes time to create a work of art. If you are a perfectionist, then you want it to be just right before you unveil it to the world. God is no different. Every time He knits a new life together in a mother’s womb, a creation that has never been seen before or since is in progress.

Each day of your life God has a plan. Now, we all don’t acknowledge Him from the beginning of our lives, but that doesn’t stop Him from reaching us. Bringing us to the place where we can hear about and accept Him is also part of the plan. Think about Paul on the road to Damascus. God may not speak to you like rolling thunder, but you will know when He does all the same.

And, once you are restored to Him, through your belief in Jesus Christ, the journey begins. God has lots for you to do. As His child, His mission is now yours – reaching people with the Good News of Jesus Christ.

It’s important work too. There are people living in pain and dying without knowing how good God is. Lives are messed up from abuse of all kinds because they don’t know that God can love them through their pain.

With so much to do, God needs your help. Maybe the vision He showed you hasn’t come to fruition yet, but it will. Why? God is not through with you yet!

God Specializes in Extreme Makeovers

Reading of the Day: Colossians 3:10

“Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.”

Change is a part of life. And, it doesn’t always come rolling in like gangbusters. Sometimes, it slides in unnoticed especially by you.

Have you ever watched that show “Extreme Makeover”? People’s lives are transformed through their home. Well, God specializes in Extreme Spiritual Makeovers – changing your life from the inside out.

Some think that before they can come to give their lives to God, they have to be perfect. When asked if they are saved, they reply, “I’m not ready yet, maybe when I get myself together.”

Let’s face it, if it were up to us to be “together” we’d never know God. also, if we had to be perfect first, there would be no need for God. these misconceptions keep many people from enjoying the blessings of a new life right now.

One worry that we do have is that God won’t be able to do anything with us because of our past mistakes. He used King David and he was a murderer and adulterer. He used Moses and he was a murderer as well. He used Rahab and she was a prostitute. You are never too messed up for God to accomplish His work in you.

Just give Him a chance. Through prayer with God and reading His word, His spirit will slowly wrap around your heart and your mind. With God as the focus, the rest of you can’t help but change. The only one who will recognize you is God because He knew what was underneath all along.

Prayer Suggestions: No matter what I’ve done, You can erase the shame. Whenever I encounter You, I never leave the same.

God Use Me Any Way You Want To

Reading for the Day: Psalm 27:4

“The one thing I ask of the Lord—
the thing I seek most—
is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
delighting in the Lord’s perfections
and meditating in his Temple.”

King David had the right idea. He loved God but he made mistakes. Sounds like us, huh? Through repentance, he was restored in God’s sight so that God could continue to use Him to accomplish His goals among His people. He wants to use you too.

Maybe you feel far away from God right now. Repent and thank Him for His restorative power. Remember what it was like before – feeling His presence each and every minute? Listening to music that reminded you how special He is in your life. Meditating on the times God saved you from countless bad situations.

If God wasn’t in your life, where would you be? His love shelters us; His compassion strengthens us; His presence uplifts us. With a heavenly Father like that what more could you ask for?

There is one thing. Let the Lord use you how He sees fit. He has proved His trustworthiness time and again. To make Him happy, we would do anything. And, what makes Him happy is our faith in His purpose for our lives. Without faith, it is impossible to please God.

That faith can move mountains but only with our cooperation. Who knows what God can accomplish with you as the vessel, His humble servant? Living His way for one day is better than a thousand days without Him.

Prayer Suggestions: Any way you bless me Lord I’ll be satisfied. Allow me to serve You as long as you need me.

God’s Love Never Quits

Reading for the Day: 1 Corinthians 13:7

“Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.”

The word “love” has been used and abused throughout the ages. It’s no wonder many don’t know what it truly means. In 1 Corinthians, chapter 13, Paul talks about how to demonstrate love. If you’ve ever read it, then you know it’s a tall order.

But, there is one who shows this love time and time again to perfection. That would be God. He sent His son Jesus to die a painful and shameful death at the hands of His enemies for the sake of all human beings. He constantly endures when those same people use His name in vain and do despicable things in His name. If we were God, the human race would have been doomed long ago.

It’s such a good thing that we are not God. His love never quits. Despite the state of the world when Jesus died and the way it is now, God still desires that all men (and women too) be saved from eternal damnation. He patiently waits for us to say, “I love you Lord; save me.” Every day He holds back punishment we deserve, replacing it with love instead, because of who He is.

When we lose faith, God is faithful. When we feel hopeless, God brings about situations in our lives to restore our faith in others and most of all, in Him. It would be a woefully difficult life to live without knowing that He loves us more than life.

Prayer Suggestions: Every good and perfect gift comes from God. the most perfect is love. Jesus died to bring it to us and now He lives to sustain it in the world through us.

Overcoming Unbelief

Reading for the Day: Romans 10:17

“So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.”

Believe it or not, God knows what you are thinking. If you don’t believe in Him or have your doubts, He is aware, but He is not mad. Many make the mistake of thinking that unbelief demonstrates a lack of faith. Actually, it shows a lack of knowledge – knowledge about God.

How do you tackle other situations where your lack of knowledge has led to doubt? You ask questions and listen to the answers. If you are having trouble with believing in God or believing that God will do something for you, then take the initiative to find out about Him.

God is not a vengeful spirit that goes around picking people off or trying to make their lives difficult. He is also not so far away that He doesn’t care about your problems. Jesus didn’t die on the cross so that God could leave us be. He was creating a new connection with us to bridge the gap that sin had brought about.

But don’t take our word for it. Talk to someone. Ask God to lead you to the person who can answer your burning questions about Him. Calling on the Lord in distress is ingrained in our hearts by the One who created us in our mothers’ wombs. He will send you what you need when you ask and move forward to find the truth.

Prayer Suggestions: God, it’s hard to believe that you are real with so much pain in the world and in my life. I want to believe but I don’t know you. Help me to find the answers and peace in my soul.

Where God Guides He Provides

Reading for the Day: Philippians 4:19

“And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.”

Abraham was told to pack up his family and move to a faraway land he had never been to. Noah was told to build an ark when there was no water in sight. Esther was told to go and see the king when she was not summoned which meant almost certain death.

Each of these situations was unsettling at best to the person who was told to do them. The one leading them was God.

When others direct us to do things, we follow for many reasons, not the least of which is trust. But, they are made of flesh and bone just like us and can’t guarantee the outcome of any situation with 100% accuracy. On the other hand, when God asks us to do something, we ask for a thousand signs from Him.

If you haven’t read the stories of these three people above take a minute to do so. They each have a common thread – God provide what they needed to do what He asked. It can feel like we are alone when no one else goes with us, but God is always there. And, He won’t leave you without the help you need to achieve the task.

It works out that way every time. Now, remember, we didn’t say that it works out the way that “we” think it should but God will work things out for your good when He leads you forward into uncertainty.

Prayer Suggestions: God, I am scared to walk this path alone. But, if you say I must go, I will, knowing that you will be there to meet me.

God Speak to Me

Reading for the Day:

“Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ”.
Romans 10:17

I’ve heard people say that God has become silent.  I wonder … if we’re not hearing God, is it because we’re not listening?  There is a lot of noise in this world.  There is a lot to keep us distracted, to keep us busy, to keep us from listening.

So how do we listen?  Through the Bible.  God’s Word is a living Word that will speak to us if we just open it and read.  We need to pray that God will reveal Himself and His will to us through his Holy Scripture.
How else can we listen?  We can literally listen by going to where the Word of God is preached.  This can be a church service, a Bible study, a gathering of friends, or a retreat.

God is not silent, even when we think He is.  There is always the Word to return to.  By prayerfully considering the Scripture, by reading and listening to the Word, God’s will can and will be revealed to us.
Sometimes there is something in our lives standing between God and ourselves.  If that something is not glorifying God, then we should probably let go of it.  This can be painful and difficult, but imagine the relief when, once it’s gone, God’s voice rings out loud and clear!

I’ve heard many people testify that once they truly humbled themselves and came before God, sincerely asking to hear His voice, God spoke.  Suddenly they flopped their Bible open to what seemed like a random page, and there was the verse they needed at that moment.  Then the next day, that just happened to be the verse the pastor preached on.  Sometimes God speaks through coincidences.

Prayer Suggestion: God is speaking.  We just need to listen.  And if you can’t hear Him right now, then pray.  Pray with conviction.  Pray, “Lord, let me hear your beautiful voice.  Speak to me God. Teach me how to listen to You.”  And He will.

Never Underestimate and Limit God

Reading for the Day:

“And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.”          Ephesians 3:17-20

Why do we try to put God into a box?  God created all the boxes in the universe!  He’s only going to fit into one if He chooses to do so, and even then, that would be some box!  Yet we are constantly trying to squeeze God into a shape of our choosing.  Maybe we do this because we are trying to understand something that our minds cannot comprehend.

What we need to do instead is agree to not understand.  God’s love surpasses knowledge.  Our limited knowledge, our limited intellect, is human.  We are not supposed to understand yet.  And if we accept that, then we can find comfort and joy in the not knowing!

Once we accept God’s love, we become rooted and established in that holy love.  Our job is to work to understand the love, because the love surpasses knowledge.  If we suggest that something on earth cannot happen, then we are not seeking to understand how wide and long and high and deep the love of Christ really is!  Why would we want to limit our God?  Don’t we want to be a part of something so unfathomable, so mysterious, so divine?  Once we agree to not understand, we can enter into a love so grand, it will fill us beyond the limits of ourselves, and spill out into the world, and into eternity.

Prayer Suggestion: “Dear Lord, Please help me to stop trying to impose my human limitations on You.  I know that my knowledge cannot fully understand You.  Please help me glorify your mystery.”

Pray Bold Prayers

Reading for the Day:

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
Philippians 4:6

A friend of mine recently said to me, “How can I pray about me finding a job when there are thousands of people out there without jobs?”  This line of thinking can be extended in many different directions.  How can we pray for a new church roof when thousands of people are homeless?  How can we pray for our children when there are thousands of starving orphans in Africa?

These questions can truly boggle our mind.  That’s why we need to rid our minds of these questions, and give them to God.  We can pray about the church roof and about the homeless people because God instructs us, through the apostle Paul, to pray about everything.

We don’t honestly know what is and isn’t important to God.  We don’t yet know the full scope of His plan.  By limiting our prayers, we are assuming that we do know God’s mind.

God wants us to pray about everything, the large and the small.  He wants us to lay it all on Him.  This is one of the reasons I love to listen to children pray.  They haven’t yet learned to be presumptuous enough to suggest what God wants them to pray about.  They just pray from their hearts.  I’ve heard a little girl ask God to protect the shadows on her walls and  a little boy pray for his beloved dog.
We can ask God to end wars.  We can ask Him to cure cancer.  We can ask Him for a new church roof.  That is the beauty of the power of prayer.  It is through Christ we are strong, and it should be through prayer that we are bold.

Prayer Suggestion: “Dear Lord, please help me to be honest with You and pray what’s really on my heart.”

God Direct My Path

Reading for the Day:

“Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light for my path.”
~ Psalm 119: 105

Oftentimes, God’s will is a mystery.  It can be frustrated, when we feel like we’re left wondering what He wants us to do.  Sometimes we feel like we’re guessing, and then second-guessing ourselves.  It is in these in-between times, when we’re not sure where we’re being led, that we must lean on faith the most.

This faith can be strengthened by reading the Bible.  God’s Word will direct our paths, even if it feels like nothing’s happening.  We might read the Bible ten days in a row and feel like we’re not gleaning anything that can be applied to what’s happening in our lives at that moment, but then on the eleventh day, we encounter a bombshell verse that makes everything clear.

That is one reason why it is so important to read the Bible prayerfully.  We need to ask God to show us what He wants us to see in His word, to ask Him to guide us with His Scripture.

We also need to ask Him to let us know (We can request that He do it gently) when we’ve taken a wrong turn.  Sometimes we misinterpret His direction, or we listen to our own voices instead of His.  It is at these times, that we most need His guidance, but it is at these times that we might be the most resistant to accepting it.

Prayer Suggestion: “Dear God, Please direct my path in every way.  Please show me Your will through Your Word and in my life.  And if I am on the wrong path, or about to make a wrong turn, please show me the right way.”
