Christian Detours

Reading for the Day: Matthew 26:41

“Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!”

Have you heard the adage, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink”? Sometimes it rightly describes us in our lives. Our parents (or guardians) teach us from childhood to discern right from wrong. They can’t expose us to every situation in life, but they do give us that foundation.

It is human nature to be led by your emotions. The book of Romans tells us that “everyone has sinned.” It is that sin that God wiped out with Jesus’ sacrifice. But, while we are living on this earth, there is still the fleshly nature to contend with.

There is a common misconception that when you accept God into your life, you become perfect right then and there. For non-believers, they think people become Christian “robots,” brainwashed to do God’s will. Neither of these things is true.

How many of us, if given the choice, would choose to take the easy way out in every situation? God’s word says that we are saved when we confess His existence and repent of our sins. But that is only the beginning. Without daily contact with God, we will still look for those “detours” in life instead of following His path.

As we spend time with God, He teaches us His “right and wrong” through His Word. A new foundation is established. Just like an earthly parent teaches, there will be consequences for disobedience. It is the firm hand of love and not disgust that guides us towards obedience and eternal life.

Prayer Suggestions: God’s discipline is far better than the world’s. Ask forgiveness for disobedience and learn from God’s loving reproof.
