Reading for the Day

Phil 1:21 – “For me to live is Christ [His life in me], and to die is gain [the gain of the glory of eternity].”

1 Tim 6:8 – “But if we have food and clothing, with these we shall be content (satisfied).”

Many people today feel discontent in life. From the very childhood we are told, who we should be or what we should look like. This brings up a strong desire in people to be someone else. They follow movie or music stars in their way of life, appearance and even beliefs. Many of us let TV and public opinion tell us, who we are and form our self perception or self esteem.

Those are the roots of discontent, unhappiness and even depression. Apostle Paul, who wrote these words in Philippians, had a very different life and self perception. He did not want to be anybody else. He was not discontent with who he was or what he had.

He learned to be happy with having enough food and clothes for life. How different this is from the way of life, widely advertised in our modern society. And still, Paul has discovered the only way to perfect contentment. He found Christ and he has found his own self in Christ. He was able to understand, who he was in Christ and what was the purpose of his life in Christ. This is the best and happiest place to be.

Paul’s self esteem or self perception no longer depended on other people. It even did not depend on his own opinion or performance. He knew, he was fully accepted by Christ and in Christ, no matter how well or how poorly  he has performed. He was loved, accepted and esteemed high by God. The rest did not really matter. This security in love is the only way to contentment in life.

Prayer Suggestion: Pray that the Lord would show you His love for you. Pray that you would feel accepted and find out who you are in Christ and find peace of mind and contentment of heart in your life.
