God is Our Supreme Giver

No one can beat God at giving. He gave the ultimate for us – His Son. There is a lesson that can be learned from His example.

Actually there is more than one lesson to be learned here. First of all, society has a warped sense of what it means to give. They tout giving on Christmas, Easter and birthdays but not much else. When you give at other times it is either to benefit you or for the media value.

That sounds harsh but it is true. Even giving to good causes is a fashion statement. Giving because you desire to help another is not a natural thing. How could it be? Because we were born into sin, it goes against our human nature to do any good without selfish motives.

It’s a good thing that God came to save us. Without Jesus, we’d be lost to Satan who does nothing for anyone else but cause pain. Living in this life without any hope in sight would be a fate worse than death.

God could have been like the world if He wanted to. The people He sent Jesus to ridiculed, beat and wanted to kill Him. In one fell swoop, He could have wiped us out and spared Jesus death on the cross. He didn’t and we are still here.

That would have been the easy way out. Humanity wouldn’t have learned a thing about God or living for Him. Instead, He gave us Jesus’ example in His Word. As you read it, ask the Holy Spirit to help you to understand exactly what the words are saying.

In God’s world, giving to others equals eternal and temporal reward. Eternally, we are storing “treasures” in heaven. Each male and female must stand before God one day and give account for their life. What you do for His glory is to your credit.

Temporally, God does bless those who bless others. The things that He gives to us in our lives are on loan. God gave you your home, clothing, food and other amenities you enjoy on a daily basis. As such, we are to bless others around us with His gracious bounty. No, you can’t take it with you, but you can enjoy it while you are here.

Giving does not just mean your possessions (including money). Sometimes, giving money is the easy way out of doing something more for someone who needs it. Give your time, talents, love and understanding. It is a little piece of God that we share with others. Best of all, God has enough of everything good to refill us when we give all we have.

When God gives us something, have you noticed that it is definitely “top shelf”? He does nothing half way. What He blesses you with is going to be fabulous.

That is what we need to give to others and also back to God. Too many of us are willing to give our castoffs to others and expect them to be grateful. The point of giving is to part with something that has meaning. That way, it comes from the heart.

Jesus gave His time, His healing gift, His love and His understanding until He was spent. When your car has traveled over lots of miles, you head to the gas station to refuel. When your spiritual meter gets low, you head back to the Bible and prayer to refuel. If you haven’t had to refuel in a while, you aren’t giving nearly enough to others.

The blessings that God gives can never be matched. He gives the best fruit: peace, kindness, goodness, joy, love, self-control, faithfulness, gentleness and patience. And, don’t forget His unblemished lamb – Jesus. Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount that if we seek God’s kingdom first, everything else that we need will be provided.

Give until it hurts and then give some more. God will sustain you with more blessings when you give for His glory to those in need of His presence.

Additional Scriptures:

“Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.”

-          Luke 6:38

“But when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.”

-          Matthew 6:3-4
