God Looks at Our Motives

Reading for the Day: Proverbs 16:1-2

We can make our own plans,
but the Lord gives the right answer.

People may be pure in their own eyes,
but the Lord examines their motives.

No one likes lie detector tests. They have a way of revealing what we would like to keep hidden. It is precisely those hidden things that God looks for. There are people who have devised ways to fool the lie detectors but you can’t fool God at all.

Motivation is important. On one hand, it helps you continue on in a task until you succeed. It can mean the difference between success and failure. On the other hand, motivation can lead to poor decisions that take us down dangerous roads in life. Those who take that tack often call it “self-preservation.”

God is not swayed by any of that. King David asked God to search his mind and know his thoughts. For most of us, that is the very place we don’t want God to be. We say one thing but do another. David was coming clean with God because he wanted to be understood just as much as he wanted to understand God.

The mind is the last frontier. It is here that God works to change not only what we do but why we do it. The Word of God says that He loves a cheerful giver. If you give to others to gain attention instead of obedience, He will know and it will not be credited to you as righteousness.

Prayer Suggestions: Ask God to show you when your motives aren’t pure. Then, allow Him to work to change them.

  1. John W. North says:

God has given me ery large dreams and very high expectations of myself from very early childhood.
BUT All of my success that I have experienced in my life has been short llived and has always ended in VERY LARGE FAILURE…
I believe that my motives have been impure…I have chased those dreams because of what came with them and I cant seem to get those desires out of my mind. I want what God wants for me and but I seem to be missing it somewhere STILL.

I thank the Lord for experiencing God’s Love and God’s Power in my life through this article!!

Sounds like God has really been working in your heart though, to awaken you and help you to realize why pursuits have ended badly. That’s the first step! You see where you weren’t and where you need to be. God is interested in your heart, and as we can see from Pro. 16:1-2, we can’t hide our true motives from God and try to continue with our own plans. If you truly know and believe that these dreams of yours are of God and is what He is calling you to, then press on! He does not and will not set up His children to fail. Although when we stray He does discipline us as beloved sons when He desires to draw us back to Him. I would encourage you to lay bare your heart before God – He delights when we come to Him! – and offer up anything of you. Ask Him to do whatever it takes for Him to be the center of every aspect of your life. Read the whole chapter of Psalm 37… “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart”. If your delight is in the Lord, then your desire will be for Him. Ask and you will receive!
You may want to re-examine your goals. Are these your goals or goals that God desires as well? John Piper in his book Don’t Waste Your Life said, “The greatest cause in the world is joyfully rescuing people from hell, meeting their earthly needs, making them glad in God, and doing it with a kind, serious pleasure that makes Christ look like the treasure He is”. Are you all about God and spreading His name? Then He will make that plan prosper because thats His plan too.
