Reading for the Day: 1 Corinthians 12: 4-6
“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us.”
Have you ever been told that you are different? It may have hurt at first. The goal of every person seems to be conformity. No one wants to “stick out” in the crowd.
God challenges us to not conform but allow Him to transform us with His purpose. For want of being the same, people have taken their lives, committed crimes and denied associations. Look at Peter. He didn’t want to be associated with Jesus so he denied knowing Him to the crowd.
God did not create us all to be the same. The apostle Paul tells compares believers to a giant body. The body has different parts that must work together so that the entire body can move. Without the feet you couldn’t walk. Without the head, you couldn’t do anything.
Further on in the chapter, Paul talks about the gifts that God gives to us through the Spirit. The main point here is that the Spirit decides who receives what gift. If God has taken such care to choose who you will be, who are you to deny that in the face of mankind?
It is an honor to be loved and used by God. The fact that such an awesome God can use us is monumental. Your contribution in this life is important to Him. When people peg you as different, just smile and tell God “thank you.”
Prayer Suggestions: Ask God to show you who He wants you to be.

Your life’s purpose isn’t always easy to understand. Many of us go through our lives without ever knowing what our true purpose is; we go through the motions of holding down a job and supporting our families without really knowing what our purpose or our true calling is. Why is that?
Our purpose in life has to be based on factors that will always be relevant, and the only thing you have that you will always have is your spirituality. As spiritual beings we all have a purpose, and when that purpose begins to dawn on you, you will carry it into your chosen fields of expression.
“The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me: your love,
O Lord, endures forever-
do not abandon the works of your hands.”
- Psalm 138:8 (NIV)
Working at your job and taking care of your family is certainly a part of God’s plan for your life – your family is very important – but it may not be the only thing that He has in mind for you. So how do you discover the fullness of God’s plan for you? How do you know when you are fulfilling the true purpose of your life?
We have to discover if our lives are pleasing in the eyes of God. We must look for the signs, both small and large, that what we are doing is what God wants for us and is spiritually right for us. Sometimes this is easy. Moses received some very clear signs that his purpose was to lead his people out of captivity in Egypt – the Lord spoke to him from a burning bush and performed miraculous miracles like turning a wooden staff into a snake before his eyes. Most of us don’t get such unmistakable messages that say, “You need to follow this path.”
But if we pray each night and ask God to give us a sign that we have chosen the right path in our careers or who our friends are or what choices we are making for our families, we will be heard. Sometimes the answer isn’t the one we really want. Perhaps we begin to feel that little bit of doubt that we haven’t chosen the best group of friends or that we aren’t doing what we should be to help our neighbors…whatever little nudges we feel in our conscience are really God’s way of gently reminding us that we may be straying from our purpose. Sometimes God doesn’t shout from a burning bush – sometimes He quietly guides us back onto the path toward our purpose. The result is the same – we will get there at the right time – in God’s time!
The most important thing we have to do is accept the Lord’s guidance and use our talents properly to fulfill our purpose once we know what that purpose is. In Jesus’ Parable of the Talents, a slave owner gave three slaves some coins called ‘talents’ to keep for him while he traveled. Two of them invested the coins and turned them into more money, while the third simply hid the money until the master returned.
We must be like the servants who invested the talents – whatever our purpose is, we must fully invest our own unique talents so that we fulfill our purpose to the best of our ability and increase their value so that our purpose doesn’t languish.
The next time you ask yourself “What is my purpose in life?” don’t turn to a career counselor, friends or co-workers. Turn to the one constant, sure thing in your life – your Spiritual Guide. Get down on your knees and ask the Lord about your Purpose and open yourself up to all the possibilities. It may be something as simple as being the best possible example of a Godly man that you can be at your current job and in your family, or it may be to walk an entirely different path.
The key is to open your heart and your soul to God’s signs wherever they are found – in the still, silent moments when you question what you are doing, in the ‘coincidences’ that seem to be leading you in a particular direction, and in those moments of joy when you realize that you’ve taken a step in the right direction.
The safest place we can ever be is in God’s Will.
“Seek his will in all you do, and he will direct your paths”
- Proverbs 3:6
God has a plan and purpose for you.
God is waiting to help you discover your purpose – just ask Him!
