Get to Know God Better

Reading for the Day:

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
~Philippians 4:8

The more we get to know God, the more we want to know Him.  So how do we start?  He’s made it somewhat simple for us.  He’s given us options.

  • Scripture.  The key to God’s heart is written in His Holy Word, and by reading it and meditating on it, we will get to know God better.
  • Prayer.  When you want to get to know another person, don’t we usually start with conversation?  The same goes for God.  Talk to God.  He’s always listening.
  • Meditation.  You don’t have to sit with your legs crossed underneath you and rock back and forth.  You can meditate on good things on your commute to work, or before you fall asleep at night.  The Bible just tells us to think about good things, things that are noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable.  That is a pleasant command to follow!  Think about good things?  It’s that easy?
  • Nature.  We can get to know God better by taking a walk through the woods, or the park, or by putting some freshly cut flowers on our dining room table.  God created the world in all its beauty for us to enjoy, and for us to know Him through.  By gazing up at the stars, we get a glimpse of Who God can be.
  • Solitude.  Solitude is more difficult for some of us than for others.  Some of us have noisy, busy jobs.  Some of us have toddlers running around the house.  But all of us would be better off if we took a few minutes out of our day to be alone with God.  To be silent, to stare at the stars, or at the grass, or at the snow, and to pray, and to think about good things.

Prayer Suggestion: “God, help me get to know You better.  Help me find You in my life, in Your Word, in Your world, and in my heart.”
